Prudential Stages for Retirement

Stages helps people navigate through pivotal life stages with confidence. By combining digital tools with access to a team of experienced advisors, we make it easy for people to get advice on their terms and their time.

I was brought onto the Stages team during it’s Alpha phase as the UX Director/Lead Designer and was given some glorious mission objectives.

  • Build a world class experience design team.

  • Empower and Lead them to build a transformative product for the Prudential product portfolio.

  • To operate as a startup within a legacy 145 year old Enterprise.

  • Oversee the overall product design, art direction and aesthetic for the Stages business.

Stages began an idea. How can a 145 year+ insurance company capture the trust, engagement and sell products & services directly to the consumer market. How can we capture the Millenial+ wallet share in a space where startups pop up daily?

The Evolution of Stages

Alpha -> Beta -> MVP

Working early on with our partners in BCG/DV the team had done extensive qual & quant research which informed some of our earlier prototypes. Once we began testing in Market and in early pilot phase we quickly isolated areas of opportunity. Iteration was the name of the game! The team swarmed early on and we were able to push rapid changes backed by all verticals of the business. This ensured a successful public launch.

Test and learn

Users at the heart of everything.
We user tested and validated all design work before launching, we continued to test in market and based our work on data. Leveraging user moderated, unmoderated and automatic testing practices.

UX Writing

A good product leverages both UX design & UX Writing. Using a dedicated UX writing team we were able to provide the best possible experience for our users.

Agile Iteration

Running an agile shop we were constantly iterating based on user feedback and data collected through our cross journey partners. Pushing out features, adjustments and constantly improving our product.

Enterprise Design System

EVO design system + Stages theme

While Prudential has it’s own dedicated design system called Evolution or “EVO” for short — stages was focused on being a D2C lead gen funnel with a focus on mobile, paid media and taking on a more modern design language. We worked closely with the core design team and crafted a stages theme specifically for this use case.

Leveraging Open A.I. — My team built a tool that helps you plan out your future dream retirement. We were the first in-house team at Prudential to utilize gen a.i. in a public capacity. As such, we were able to set the standard going forward.
